Glaucoma is a disease of the major nerve of vision, called the optic nerve. The optic nerve receives light from the retina and transmits impulses to the brain that we perceive as vision. Glaucoma is characterized by a particular pattern of progressive damage to the optic nerve that generally begins with a subtle loss of side vision (peripheral vision). If glaucoma is not diagnosed and treated, it can progress to loss of central vision and blindness.

Glaucoma is usually, but not always, associated with elevated pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure). Generally, it is this elevated eye pressure that leads to damage of the eye (optic) nerve. In some cases, glaucoma may occur in the presence of normal eye pressure. This form of glaucoma is believed to be caused by poor regulation of blood flow to the optic nerve.

Symptoms of Glaucoma

1.    In initial stages there are no symptoms.

2.    In closed-angle glaucoma, blurring of vision and sudden painful attack in one eye occurs. A cloudy cornea, nausea and vomiting, redness of the eye and a halo effect around the object occurs.

3.    In open-angle glaucoma, both the eyes are usually affected by loss of peripheral vision, marked by blind spots.

Causes of Glaucoma

1.    Rise of pressure within the eyeball, increases the quantity of aqueous humor (clear fluid inside the eye that supplies nutrients and carries away waste products away from the lens and cornea) that ultimately damages the optic nerve and causes blindness.

2.    People above 65 years of age, anyone with a family history of the disease, people taking B.P. medications or cortisone, severely near sighted and diabetics are at a greater risk, for developing glaucoma.

3.    Sudden blockage near the iris cause extreme intralocular pressure that causes permanent blindness within a day or two. This is closed-angle glaucoma.

Eye Exercise

Look in a straight line at the sun from side to side your closed eyes. While opposite the sun, gradually rotate your head from side to side as far as you can.

    • Fartin Flirt says:

Pretty sure nothing would make your vision become 20/20 instantly, so why not just go to the eye doctor? Glasses aren’t that bad and I’m pretty sure you will find a frame you like. Or you could always get contacts since most people don’t even notice.

Is there any ways to imrove shortsightedness through home remedies?
Since about 12 my eyesight decreased and started to wear glasses for shor sightedness then contact lenses. Now 25, I don’t wear contact lenses but glasses. If I don’t wear glasses I can’t tell who is in front of me within 25inches. Any help pls?

    • TheEyeGuy says:

Along with The Bates Method, look for learning the principles of natural eyesight and avoid anything that talks about eye exercises.

Nutrition is beneficial, but we mostly have to change the way we use our eyes, mind and body together.

    How to correct bad eyesight.?
Hi, i’m 14 and wear glasses. When I grow up I plan to become a U.S. Navy SEAL. To qualify is to have 20/20 eyesight.Uncorrected vision no worse than 20/200 in both eyes. Both eyes must be correctable to 20/20. The doctor who gave me the prescription says that my eyesight cannot be corrected. This scares me to think that I cannot achieve my life goal. I have been eating carrots and even thinking of having eye surgery when I turn 18. It will be helpful to list anything to boost up eyesight. Home remedies? Eye exercises? Thanks for your time.

    • LadyLynn says:

Sorry, hon, but there are no home remedies or exercises. Would it be OK for you to wear contacts? Also, I don’t care what your doctor said. I’d get a second opinion from an ophthalmologist. That’s an eye M.D., which optometrists are not.
Don’t give up yet on your wonderful dream. I think Lasik may still woek for you.
Bless you and good luck! :)
