Eye Care for Senior Citizens

Author: G. J. Rigdon

Is declining eyesight apart of getting older? Well the answer to that question is yes and no. for us older Americans who fail to get the proper preventive care, our vision will continue to get worse with age. Most of us can expect by age 65 to have some sort of eye impairment, but with a proactive mindset toward preserving our eyesight we can off set the inevitable. Most importantly, never assume that your vision irregularities are just a regular process of getting older.

Preventive eye care is crucial to maintaining good eyesight. See your eye doctor once a year and protect your eyes from the suns ultraviolet rays by wearing quality sun glasses.

Some of the most common eye disorders that affect us seniors are diabetic eye disease and cataracts.

Diabetic Eye Disease: Diabetic eye disease should be taken very seriously, it can actually cause blindness. Many of us with diabetes mellitus may not even be aware that we have the disease. The sudden shifts and changes in blood sugar can cause vision to become very blurry. To combat and possibly prevent diabetic eye disease we should always strive to maintain a proper weight with regular exercise and good healthy eating. Also stay away from smoking at all times

Cataracts: Cataracts should not be taken lightly; the disease clouds the lens in the eye that affects our vision. As we get older we sometimes develop protein that bundles together and clouds a small area of the lens which over time can grow even bigger and seriously impair our vision. Some symptoms are bad night vision and blurry vision. Fortunately, cataracts can be removed with surgery if necessary.

Nevada has a Disability RX Vision benefit program. The program was developed to give low income seniors and those with verifiable disability assistance with the cost of prescriptions and medications. To be eligible for the program participants must be 62 or older and have one year of continuous residency prior to the date of application in Nevada.

Don't take your eyesight for granted, so many of us fail to realize the beauty and importance of good vision. Good vision plays the most important role in our every day life, and failure to keep our eyesight in moderate condition can be devastating. Imagine not being able to read the local paper, sign a contract, or even having the privilege to drive a car, well these are just some of the reason for us older Americans to make sure that we get yearly eye exams.

Why does my eyesight get blurry sometimes when I enter large places like malls?
It’s the strangest thing. I’ve always had 20/20 but every now and then whenever I enter a mall or something similar, my eyesight will all of a sudden begin to blur a little and go fuzzy. The same happened a couple of times last year in an auditorium class and I could barely read the projection screen.

Sometimes this can happen because of a difference in lighting etc… Also if you suddenly change your range of focus (look at something far away after focusing on something closer) your eyes can take time to adapt. Im sure its nothing to worry about but if it persists go and see your doctor to set your mind at ease.

Blurred vision is VERY serious. however, it can be many different things. Call a doctor or go to one as soon as possible. I stared at optical illusions for 2 hours in elementary school and i got blurred vision and told my mom I couldn’t see right (i didnt tell her about the illusions) and she rushed me to the doctor and considered that i go to the hospital. It can be a sign of a blood clot in the brain, a stroke, or a tumor. But less seriously it can be a result of medication or who knows what. tell someone though because that isn’t good

  4. Am i going blind? says:

Scared, am i going blind? my eyesight all of a sudden, mostly on my left eye, is getting blurry faster…?
See my far sight vision has always been bad, though i can see good real close, though all of a sudden my left eye is going blurry, past week, it seems to have gotten a lot worse, my right eye is still worse than my left, by 4 levels,

i dont know, just asking for some options, im not seeing black or anything, if i close my right eye while looking from the left i see black to the right of my eye, just barely, but i think thats my right eye or my nose………

shit i dont know, goin to the eye doctor soon, just want some answers before i do though.

I do play alot of video games aswell, but dont think that should hurt my eyesight, i know friends who play more than me with 20/20 vision

If your vision has become rapidly worse, it could be optic neuritis. There are other possibilities too; it is hard to say without further information. You need to see an eye doctor as soon as possible for diagnosis and treatment. If it is that bad they will want to do a good examination of the back of the eye (retina and optic nerve) and probably visual fields to find out what is going on.

All of a sudden I have bad eyesight. Why?
I used to have perfect 20/20 vision, but starting about a year ago my eyesight started going bad. I can still see perfect when words are close, but starting at about the 10 foot range and beyond everything is blurry. What factors could have caused this deterioration?
Oops, I should have mention I’m only 17 years old.
